FLIPPING FLAPJACKS FOR FELLOW FRIENDS

July 23, 2010 - Deborah Couy, Bonnie Gray and Lucille Chisholm celebrate the opening day of Edmonton's Capital-Exhibition by throwing a picket line pancake picnic for all their co-workers on strike at McKesson Canada in Edmonton.  Two hundred McKesson Canada members continue to be on strike to back up their demands for wage fairness, benefit improvements as well as issues of dignity and respect.

 

Tara Singh Parmar MEET KATRINA PIECHOTTA!

Katrina began working as a cashier at the Forest Lawn Sobeys in Calgary, Alberta in 2001.  As a member of UFCW Local 401, she began attending union meetings and became a shop steward.  In 2004, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Calgary and became further involved in the activities of her union.  She worked on a number of political campaigns and organizing drives, including those at Lakeside Packers in Brooks and Extra Foods in High River.

Katrina returned to university in 2005, attending the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law.  During this time she continued working at the Forest Lawn Sobeys, and continued her involvement with UFCW Local 401.  Upon obtaining her law degree, she was awarded the Dean Michael Wylie Social Responsibility Award, presented annually to a graduating student who has made a significant contribution to the understanding or resolution of social or human rights issues while acquiring a legal education at the Faculty of Law.

Katrina spent the majority of her articling year at Chivers Carpenter, an Edmonton law firm that practices exclusively in the area of labour and employment law.  She returned to Calgary to complete her articles at Calgary Legal Guidance, a poverty law centre that provides a variety of legal services to the city's disadvantaged community.

Katrina started working as a full-time union representative with UFCW Local 401 in July, 2009 and became a member of the Law Society of Alberta in August, 2009.
