Want A Union
The Union Advantage
YOU ARE CONNECTED
  The Union Advantage
  The Union Advantage
1. Together we bargain ? divided we beg!
In a union, you have bargaining power. As individuals we have little or no influence. Even some workers that have highly specialized skills, like nurses, firefighters and hockey players, join unions to maximize their negotiating power. Join the UFCW, the largest private sector union in North America.

2. A contract
A negotiated union contract protects terms and conditions of employment. Your union contract rights cannot be altered at your employer's whim. It is enforceable by a grievance and arbitration procedure. It's a contract! And it has teeth!

3. Higher wages
Statistics Canada has consistently reported large differences between union and non union wages. This difference may not "jump out" at you when you first get a union job, but as your wage increases come, you will know the difference! And wages under a Union contract cannot be reduced by an employer during its term.

4. Benefits
Interested in dental, pension, sick, short and long term disability benefits? The union advantage has been reviewed and proven. Many union contracts have expansive employer paid benefit provisions. (For more stats and details on the union wage and benefit advantage call us at 1-888-GO-UNION)

5. Job Security
In a competitive global economy, where is the buffer from lay offs and job loss? Bad boss? The union difference is job security. When the crunch comes unions are often able to make sure that the experienced and committed workers are protected first. We fight to prevent technology from replacing you. If you are reprimanded, suspended or fired without just cause, our representatives and lawyers will go to bat for you. Unfair discipline can be removed; if you are fired unjustly, you can have your job back.

6. Respect and Fairness
Unsafe workplace? A union won't stand for it!

All forms of harassment - including sexual harassment, discrimination, employer disrespect - unions fight all of them. Laws are often ineffective and the agencies there to enforce them can be bureaucratic. Unions even help with workers compensation claims when you are off the job! Protect your right to work with dignity with the power of a union behind you. Protect yourself and your co-workers, with the UFCW.

Joining a union - it's your right!
Labour laws protect your right to join a union and participate in its activities. Canada's rate of unionization is high with 35% of workers belonging to unions in some provinces. At over double the rate of unionization as in the U.S.A., it is clear, that, as the United Nations has said, "Canada has a #1 standard of living"!

Unions and Business
Businesses sometimes over react to the introduction of a union. The law, however, protects you from firings and any other sort of punishment for union activity. When employers break the law in this area union lawyers bring "unfair labour practice" charges before the Alberta Labour Relations Board. A large number of precedents indicate without question that you have the right to unionize your work place, with full legal protection.

Enlightened business leaders know that no union wants to put them out of business. In fact many of the most successful businesses in Canada and the world are totally unionized! Workers, through their unions, only want a fair reward for their work, and to be provided with decent rights. In fact, some studies indicate that unionized workers are actually more productive than their non union counterparts. A sense of job security can lead workers to stay at a job, and start to view their employer's success as something critical to their interests. Some employers recognize this. All employers are certainly not anti union.
