The Process of Unionizing Simply put, if 40% or more of workers in a particular business express their desire to have a union by signing a petition or union membership cards, you are on your way.
Petitions or membership cards are ultimately given to the Labour Relations Board. THE COMPANY NEVER SEES THEM. If support is there, the Labour Board orders a secret ballot vote. If a majority of voting employees support the Union, the Board "certifies" the Union as your legal bargaining agent. Remember, though, there are a number of technical rules and important tactical decisions to be made, and it is not recommended that you attempt to unionize your workplace on your own.
What Does It Cost you to Unionize? Assistance from the U.F.C.W. is available immediately at little or no initial cost. If the effort to unionize is achieved by signing a petition, there is no fee at all; if it is achieved by signing membership cards, each employee applicant must pay only $2.00 to join. NO UNION DUES ARE CHARGED UNTIL A UNION CONTRACT THAT YOU ACCEPT IS NEGOTIATED. The dues are usually $6.00 per week. Union dues are tax deductible. (To find out more about Union Dues, click here)
