  Union Organizing - Why?
"Organizing" is a term union representatives use to describe "unionizing" non union workplaces. Unions try to expand their ranks, or invite interested "non union" workers into their circle for two main reasons.

1. It's the Right Thing to Do.
Today's non union workers are often poorly paid. They work random, often unscheduled hours. Part time work or little job security is common and benefits are few or non existent. Workplace disrespect and harassment, unsafe working conditions, and unfair firings can still characterize even a modern workplace.

Workers in these circumstances will always have somewhere to go as long as there are unions. A union is not a business, it is a group of workers that seeks fairness for themselves and other workers as well. We are here to help.

2. It protects existing union workers and their contracts.
If an employer is a particular industry operates non union, with lower wages and benefits than a competing unionized business, it poses a threat to the good conditions of work at the unionized company. Company negotiators come to the bargaining table and say "we need lower wages and benefits in order to compete". The unionized workers seek to "organize" the non union workplace to create a level playing field. Businesses should compete based on their managerial ability, not by paying their workers less.

Some business leaders comment that unions are just trying to get "rich and powerful" by expanding their ranks. What some employers are really afraid of is that unions might sufficiently expand their resources to have more power to ensure the fair treatment of workers (Television - Maple Leaf Pork). That is what unions spend their money on.

3. Union strength means better representation for you!
Finally, bigger unions can be more effective representatives of the workers in today's powerful companies. Want to make Wal-Mart or McDonald's a fairer place to work? You better be big! Want to lobby the government for better labour laws? Your voice better be loud!
